In the 21 Laws of Leadership, John Maxwell teaches that: Leaders develop daily- not in a day.  It’s a process, and it takes time. And this idea that growth and change is a process, not a one-time event applies to every area of personal development and personal growth.  You can’t take one course, read one book or go to one conference and then suddenly shazam! you are successful.  It’s a process, and it takes time.  It’s the learning changes you – if you let it.

There are two kinds of people in the world – those who acquire knowledge and those who apply knowledge.

People who acquire knowledge may look and sound impressive around the dinner table or teaching from a podium – but in the end, all they have is words.

People who apply knowledge are constantly changing – because it is in the applying of the things we learn that we are changed, our circumstances are changed and the people around us are influenced to change.  People who apply knowledge change the world.

When you apply something that you have learned, when you put it into practice it changes you.  It may change how you approach a situation, it may change how you make a decision, it may change how you react to someone – the point is: in that moment, you are behaving differently from how you would have behaved yesterday. It may only be a small change: perhaps you pause to listen a little longer to hear what the other person is saying and as a result you avoid a misunderstanding because you don’t leap to a wrong conclusion.   It may only be a small change, but the cumulative effect of all these small changes if you make one every day, every week – over time they become second nature and over time you become a different person.  IF, and only if – you decide to close the gap between what you know and what you do – IF, and only if, you not only learn new things but also apply what you have learned to the way you live.

I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.
- Leonardo Da Vinci

I love that quote – it sums up perfectly the road we must take if we want to change for the better.  I’m sure you have felt the urgency – the certainty that you need to do something – to change something because you are not prepared to put up with your situation any longer.  It may be a job, a relationship, where you live – whatever it is – there comes that day when you realise you need to do something and it feels urgent.  You may know what needs to be done, or you may go seeking advice from a coach or a course – you learn what you need to do.  But having that knowledge in your head will not change the situation – it is only when you apply that knowledge – when you take action – that the situation begins to change – because when you begin to change your circumstance begin to change.

Being willing is not enough, saying you will is not enough – only when you DO something will anything happen.
